Looked through old diaries today. My first archived month, November 98.
I had written a while before that, but I recycled them after a week.
It seemed like such a hubris to save diaries online. I didn't consider
that I could learn anything from them myself.
Debra of Cornercam, later SoyaRatCam, now EveryDayItems, was the first I saw who had an online journal, called a JPEG diary. The influence from Debs is rather strong in that first month: Short entries, mainly related to things that happened around me. And quite a bit of whining. (Debs was whining a lot more before her boyfriend moved in. I can certainly understand that. Having your beloved living in another country way across the sea must be rather disturbing.) Sometime in the meantime (and I intent to find out where) my style has changed. I can identify some influence from Nova Notes, with longer entries and more opinions, reflections and memories. Or perhaps that is just the way things move when we get more used to this medium? The change in layout (which will probably change more for a while) is largely due to now working in 800x600 screen resolution, which made the lines seem terribly long. It is a problem I have no idea how to fix, that a page will look different on different systems. I try to make sure it is readable on all systems, still.
After all the non too subtle references from other journallers, I
finally looked up
(parenthesis).
To my horror I saw that the right hand side bar was nearly the same size
as mine, even unto the seperator bar (colored at her site, invisible
at mine). Even the grey color was similar, only transposed.
Now the in-crowd will think that I have stolen her layout!

Workplace music today: Silk Road by Kitaro.
Main event of the day: McFeast & milkshake at McDonalds. (Served by the only Asian girl present.)
Junk mail of the day: Asking for $2 and your e-mail adress to support the fight against junk mail. (Poorly formatted.)
Added my non-gaiety to the F.U.Q. More later, I suppose. |
