Goo and fresh air

Posted by Itlandm on April 19, 2013

This morning I got up early because I had something in my bronchi and could not breathe freely. I suspect my sinuses, they have been working tirelessly the last few nights filling my nose and throat with thick goo. I guess some of this made it further down, it sometimes does after a few days. It remind me way too much of my childhood when I would wake up unable to breathe from asthma. But this was not asthma, it did not work the same way. Still, I could not keep sleeping like that. As usual, I got better with time, as I coughed up the goo. Around 10 I was fine.

In fact, after I came home from work I took a walk with some jogging to keep the pulse at recommended level. So there was no sign of respiratory problems at that time. It seems to be only at night, especially toward the morning.

Spring arrived fairly late (for the south coast of Norway) and it is still chilly, but no longer below freezing. So I can exercise now, but I do it in moderation at least as I start the season. The arctic winter has not really let me exercise outside, except walking rapidly to and from the bus, about 25 minutes a day. I guess even that is more than some people get, but adding another 35-40 minutes feels good.  Humans just were not created in an office, as I like to say. (Although Martin Luther supposedly believed women were created with larger backsides as a sign that they should sit still. Well, sitting still will surely help those grow even larger, I think.)

Just a little more

Posted by Itlandm on April 13, 2013

They built a new bridge across the river/fjord here in Mandal, from the new big culture house over to the mainland part of the town. I walked across it for the first time today ( a few hours after witnessing the official opening, with marching bands and balloons and stuff). When I go that direction, the round trip around the town center becomes 40 minutes instead of 30. Nice.

Deep breaths

Posted by Itlandm on April 1, 2013

Strangeness of the day. I am reluctant to even call this a health challenge as it is now. Since sometime this morning, I have felt the need to breathe extra deeply, as if I was not getting enough air. I believe this is usually a sign of neurosis, although I have also read a theory that it comes from lack of salt. I don’t see that I have eaten less salt than usual though. I have a very good reason to be neurotic in a few days, though.

The interesting part is where I went for a brisk walk, as I have started doing now that the arctic winter seems to have ended and the air is above freezing during daytime. I put on my pulse watch again, and was surprised to see the pulse being about as low as it has ever been, just three days after it was racing like crazy for five hours. Now, if I had actually been having trouble absorbing oxygen, a brisk walk would not even been possible, and if I tried, my heart would definitely have had to work hard to bring what little oxygen there was around. But the opposite was true. I would guess that my deeper breathing was the cause for the low pulse.

Still here

Posted by Itlandm on March 22, 2013

Despite my whining (or did it help?) I have gotten better for now, from all the things I whined about. I still have things I could whine about, if I took the time.

And then: Stomach!

Posted by Itlandm on March 19, 2013

Yesterday, after a light dinner and a glass of Pepsi, my stomach started feeling like there was a balloon inflated in it. Uncomfortably full, despite the fact that I had not filled it to the extreme. I felt like there was a lot of air in it and I needed to burp, but I could not (and there probably wasn’t). It was quite uncomfortable, but by bedtime it was livable enough that I could sleep, just half an hour to an hour delayed.

Today, whenever I have eaten more than a couple spoonfuls an hour, I’ve felt bloated again. I have also since late in the workday had various levels of queasiness. On the commute bus home I actually had a plastic bag open in front of me in case I needed to throw up. Luckily I did not – I slept most of the way.

I am not sure the problem is actually with the stomach sac itself. I have also gradually developed diarrhea, so it may be pressure from the guts that is making the stomach feel bloated. Or it could be the other way around, I suppose. Hard to say.

There has been only occasional and fairly light pain, and I guess this is the kind of stuff that happens to humans. I keep getting surprised when it happens to me, for some reason.

And again

Posted by Itlandm on March 17, 2013

Sleeping for well over 8 hours helped, but in the evening the jaws flare up again. There is probably some spot where the infection stays and then it comes out when given a chance. Perhaps the root of another tooth: One of them is kind of sensitive to pressure, so that may be one candidate. Or it could be the sinus right above the roots, drawing a steady supply of bacteria from the nose cavities. A couple decades ago I would have been eager to take penicillin to get rid of it, but these days that is not certain to help, and every visit to the doctor’s is a new opportunity to pick up bacteria that are resistant to nearly everything. The antibiotics that still help are almost as dangerous as the bacteria themselves.

Face again

Posted by Itlandm on March 15, 2013

For the last couple weeks at least, I have had pain in my upper jaw / lower sinuses off and on, perhaps especially if I did not get enough sleep. However, last night I slept for about 8 hours (one hour in my chair and seven in bed, or nearly so) and tonight after I came home from work, my upper jaw quickly filled with pressure and some pain. It has spread a bit across the face, first on the right side but later on the left too. On the right side, I can feel a sore lump on the inside of my cheek. Generally my face feels sore and stiff. Also my neck is a little stiff, but not much. Does not sound like a common cause of death, but I am still chronicling it in case it somehow turns out to be useful to know in the future.

Whenever you break a tooth

Posted by Itlandm on March 7, 2013

Actually, it is one of the two synthetic teeth, the one on the left, that has come loose again. It is the most common of the two to come loose, and I usually have to fasten one of them each year at the least.  It is definitely loose; I felt it a few days ago, and now it can move a little back and forth. I wonder if this is related to the feeling of swelling and pressure in the upper jaw. When it has been loose a while, bacteria make their way up to behind the false tooth and the foundation it was fastened to.

The interval at which they used to break coincided with the interval I used to buy computers for the first couple years, causing me to come up with the rule that “Whenever you buy a computer, God kills a tooth” (a parody on the “Whenever you xxx, God kills a kitten” meme). Then the loosening of the tooths started to get ahead of the computer buying, and now it seems to be entirely disconnected. But I could always turn the rule around: Whenever you break a tooth, it is time buy a computer?

Well, hopefully there won’t be any serious health consequences, what with this being a false tooth and all.

How long was Adam in Paradise

Posted by Itlandm on February 19, 2013

I slept a full night in my bed last night, but tonight I have a tight chest and occasional deep cough. Should probably sleep in the master bathroom so as to not keep the Muslims upstairs awake all night. Cranky Muslims is not something I – or the neighborhood as a whole – needs more of.

I am a bit nervous about sleeping when I am not breathing easily. I have done what I could – used the asthma inhaler and taken cough drops – so I guess it is time to give it a try.

***

Morning. Well, that was an interesting night. I slept in one-hour spurts, although the first two were mostly spent in brainwave entrainment. I am tired and still have a chest cold, but I am alive for now, so that is a good thing as far as I am concerned.

Broken sleep

Posted by Itlandm on February 16, 2013

The last two nights I have been back in the bedroom, using my timer to wake up first after 3 hours, then 2, then 2 again. The first night I woke up by myself before the timer, the next I woke by the timer. I believe I have slept for about 7 hours in total each night. I was a little more tired than usual in the morning, but not at work. I have not had any other problems with it until this afternoon at work, when my right eye became a little irritated.  I keep blinking but it remains irritated. Further down, in the top of my mouth, above the gums but to the side of the palate, there is a bulge which is also tender and will probably (judging from past experience) develop cold sores. The right side of my face between these two points is generally tender and hurts a little. My take on this is that my immune system is not working perfectly – the right side of my face tends to be the “canary in the mine” for such cases. A sinus may be involved, especially since the sinuses are probably where the chewy goo in my throat and bronchi comes from in the first place.
