Book
Pic of the day: A man rides through, the second volume of Stephen Donaldson's Mordant's Need. (The first being called, appropriately, The mirror of her dreams. According to legend, that one would years later inspire Piers Anthony to write his famous The color of her panties. Not the most reverent tribute in the history of Speculative Fiction, but what can you expect from Piers Anthony?)

Anyway, I've been mind-nibbling on the book in todays picture for days now, so I figured I may as well show it off instead of my hairy breasts (and hairy face too, as I haven't shaved for a couple days).

...

Went to work today, even though it was Saturday. I wanted to make the new PC ready, install the interactive education program and try it a little. I also secretly hoped to meet my boss, and I was in luck. She is more likely than anyone else to be there on Saturdays or long into the afternoon; she takes her job very seriously. I was anxious to make sure she understood the size of the upcoming education program, as well as its futility: We get Word97 now, but Word will not be integrated into our other office solutions until at best next year, quite probably not till 2001.

I was delighted to hear that not only was my boss aware of the problem, she had given it thought and even asked a guy from HQ about it. She was not aware of the tight follow-up program, but was not overly concerned about it. It seems that I can rely on her support for making only the most essential education mandatory, the programs that we will use right from the day we start. My boss is a very reasonable and practical woman, and she puts a lot of thought and work into her job. They say that a female leader has to work doubly as hard as a man. They also say that fortunately, this isn't too difficult. Not that I would know. Leadership is disgusting to me; and hard work even more so.

...

In the evening, I was invited to my pious friend Dan, whose wedding is the coming weekend. He and much of the family were working on his house, getting it ready. His brother had called me to help fixing his PC, which was going to the dogs. After much experimenting, I found that the CD-ROM drive was probably damaged and would bear replacing. Too bad he had first tried to solve the problem by formatting both of the hard disks...

We talked till well past midnight about the things that belong to the Kingdom of Heaven. I sincerely like pietists. They are sort of like fundamentalists, only they are basically harmless: Judging themselves as harshly as the standard fundie judges others. They are definitely worried about me losing out on becoming the Bride of Christ. I don't much feel like being the bride of anyone, truth to say, though I am a friend of the bridegroom. Which is why Dan invited me to his wedding in the first place.
