Ray Moody was the incarnation of the old-style gentleman explorer: Impeccably dressed, insatiably curious, unfailingly polite and quite reserved. He was the first of the Micropolitans to make a long journey, to the Far East, and it is thanks to him that all townies, all downtownies and more and more students now great each other with a bow instead of a joke or a prank. Ray was already an old man when he came to Micropolis together with his son and granddaughter. He gradually fell in love with the equally formal and scientifically minded Esther Grady, and the two of them got engaged during the trip to the Far East. They were never formally married, for soon Ray had to embark on his final journey, to the Other Shore. He set off on this journey with the same curiosity and unruffled calm as all before, but the loss set Esther on the quest for immortality that led to the introduction of robots in Micropolis and the first stirrings of a non-animist religion.
