Pic of the day: Emergency fad. These tend to get overmuch attention.

Short: My layers

I have told you how my life seems to consist of fads, one following another. This is not quite correct: It is more like my life consists of three different layers, which change at different speeds. The lower layer changes so slowly as to seem almost permanent. My religion, my job and my journal all belong in this category. On the opposite end are the smaller everyday tasks that only last a few minutes each and are often imposed on me from outside, such as doing the dishes or reading e-mail. The middle layer consists of the fads I have mentioned, which usually last two weeks or so. These are my hobbies, typically computer games, but sometimes also buying gadgets and even more expensive objects. Many of these fads return over and over, some of them frequently and some of them less so.

I tend to write disproportionately much about the fads. The longer trends show up sometimes but are often taken for granted, because they have been around for so long, often since before I started this journal. (Though some of them have changed dramatically, such as no longer having a best friend. But I have documented that in painstaking detail, I think.) The small things, what we journalers call the laundry list, seem too small and insignificant. (Although they can take a bite out of a day sometimes!) So the fads tend to occupy my attention from day to day, in the timespan I feel most comfortable writing about.

My current fad is returning to City of Heroes again, after an emergency break to fit in Smallville season 5. Yes, I have already finished it, even though I have not yet received the actual DVDs. The joys of BitTorrent. Though I would have preferred to download the content directly from the legal sales outlet and at full quality, then burn it myself. Or even better, not burn it myself, but just have the option to download it again if I delete it at some point in the future. But the world has not yet advanced to my level yet, so I rely on more chaotic tools to achieve the correct result.
