Trying again!

It is midnight between October 31 and November 1. It is the moment I have waited for these last few weeks: It's NaNoWriMo time! It brings to mind a line from Leonard Cohen's song First We Take Manhattan: "How many nights I've prayed for this to let my work begin!" But of course I have that CD at my office. After all, the song starts like this: "They sentenced me to 20 years of boredom for trying to change the system from within." -Hey, would you believe this?? The speech recognition software seems to actually understand me better when I sing than when I speak! Perhaps they should change the name to song recognition software?

(Anyway, I've been at my workplace for more than 20 years, and the system is changed beyond recognition, as described in my Four years ago entry. But enough of that.)

I am as ready as I can be: I have characters, I have vague ideas, I have a possible ending, and I had Pepsi with extra caffeine. And I have told everyone, so now I have to complete the novel to impress the chicks. OK, not the chicks; chicks are what's for dinner. But you know what I mean. Once you have boasted that you will do something, you almost have to follow through. Besides, I lost NaNoWriMo last year. If I don't win this time, how can I look Tsaiko in the eyes? (Not that I can look her in the eyes anyway, more's the pity, since she lives on another continent; of course I meant it metaphorically. But the fact remains that Tsaiko finished her NaNoWriMo novel last year and I did not. And I do feel some friendly rivalry here... she is also doing NaNoWriMo this year again, and so are a couple other friends.)

But now, if you will excuse me, I have a novel to write!
